  • Provenance: Private Collection, Oklahoma

White Bull (c. 1849–1947) was a Minneconjou Lakota warrior—a nephew of Sitting Bull through Hunkpapa kinship—renowned for his role in the 1876 Battle of the Little Bighorn. After the Great Sioux War he settled on the Cheyenne River Reservation in present-day South Dakota, where he became a respected community leader and tribal judge. In the 1930s he gave detailed battle accounts to historian Stanley Vestal, published in Warpath (1934), which helped shape modern understanding of Lakota perspectives on the Plains wars. He remained an honored elder—famously photographed at the battle's 50th anniversary in 1926—and died at Cherry Creek in 1947.
