  • Provenance: Private Collection, Oklahoma

Chief Gall was a leading Hunkpapa Lakota chief and war strategist. Raised near the Moreau River, he became a principal headman under Sitting Bull and earned renown in the Great Sioux War of 1876—especially at the Battle of the Little Bighorn, where he helped mass warriors against Reno's attack and then cut off Custer's companies. After following Sitting Bull to Canada (1877), Gall returned and surrendered in 1881, settling at Standing Rock Agency. There he emerged as a civil leader and judge, advocated accommodation with U.S. authorities, and opposed the Ghost Dance movement. He died Dec. 5, 1894 near Oak Creek (Standing Rock), remembered as one of the most important Hunkpapa leaders of the 19th century.

The condition reports are prepared by SFAA staff members who are not art conservators or restorers, nor do they possess the qualifications needed for comprehensive evaluation. Each condition report is an opinion of the staff member and should not be treated as a statement of fact.
