  • Provenance: Lee Male / Ledel Gallery, New York
by descent to Judith Male, 1997

Pioneer of American photojournalism and industrial photography, Bourke-White began with dramatic large-format views of factories (Otis Steel) and modern architecture (Chrysler Building gargoyles), then became a star for Henry Luce's magazines—first at Fortune, and in 1936 the first staff photographer at LIFE; her Fort Peck Dam picture was LIFE's first cover. In 1930–32 she was the first Western photographer allowed to document Soviet industry (Five-Year Plan). With writer Erskine Caldwell she published You Have Seen Their Faces (1937), a searing look at the American South. During WWII she was among the first accredited female war correspondents, photographed the Blitz in Moscow (1941), flew on combat missions, and helped photograph the liberation of Buchenwald. Postwar, she covered the Partition of India/Pakistan and made the iconic "Gandhi at the Spinning Wheel" image.

Ledel Gallery, founded in 1981 by photographer and collector Lee Male in New York City's SOHO art district, was a pioneering space dedicated to Fine Art Photography. Lee, inspired by mentors like Larry Colwell and her admiration for Edward S. Curtis, was able to build a significant photography collection. Her close ties with key figures like Cornell Capa allowed her to showcase renowned photographers such as Ruth Bernhard, Esther Bubley, and Barbara Morgan, alongside iconic masters like Berenice Abbott. Lee's dedication to promoting both established and emerging artists left an indelible mark on the photography world before her passing in 1997.
